As the Native American Saura and Keyauwee tribes were the earliest inhabitants of what is now Greensboro, the first settlers were mostly Germans, Quakers and Scotch-Irish. In 1807, officials mapped out a 42-acre piece of land and named it Greensborough, later spelling it Greensboro. The new town prospered and became a center for educational and economic opportunities. The center of the Southern textile industry, producing denim, flannel and overalls, Greensboro experienced new construction and burgeoning growth, including the courthouse, churches and other civic architecture.
